I had several different locations for setting and background of shoots. I considered a studio with a black background, graffitied alley way, woodland and a field.
Using an alley that had been graffitied would have suited the genre well for the magazine but may not have suited the artist quite as specifically . I also do not know very many places like this and so would have had much opportunity for this kind of location anyway. Using a field would not have suited the genre very well and would have looked quite simple and it was not the look I was really going for in my magazine.
I used a studio with a black background to get some images of the model being the main focus, something basic but looks professional and suits the style and genre of the magazine. I used woodland to represent the artist and their music, as well as for something more interesting and different. In my plans I had decided to most likely used the woods as it is most suitable for the magazine and more specifically the artist.
I chose this shot for my front cover because the background is black, this makes the model stand out as well as it matching the colour scheme and genre. The model is also looking directly at the camera which gives eye contact to draw The reader in. The model is also facing straight on and is seen in close up to draw attention to their face and makeup which strongly represents their genre of music. The model is also positioned slightly to the right giving space on the left for plugs, flashes, coverlines and other devices.
I chose this shot for my DPS because it gives a lot of space for text on the left hand side while making the model the main focus of the page on the right hand side. The background (woodland) suits the genre of music that is dance/rave/alternative and the genre of the artist which is specifically ‘witchouse’. The models pose also helps them stand out on the page but also represents the genre because of its obscurity as well as the idea of movement (dancing). The model is also dressed to suit the artists genre. It’s unique but also stands out against the background.
I chose this shot for my contents page because the model is well framed and the image represents the artist well. The dark makeup and the smoke represents the artist and what they are known for and even what they talk about in their interview. The lighting is also good and the smoke has a nice effect which draws in the readers attention.
I also used a couple photos I had taken at music events. I thought these would be appropriate for the contents page because the genre of the magazine is dance/alternative/underground music which is represented by events such as raves and gigs.
